Because far from removing bias, what we've actually done is give it a gym membership, a shot of espresso, and a promotion.
Teach a robot to discriminate
In a weird way, the computers are innocent. The real crime is that we handed them the worst homework assignments in the world and told them to copy all the answers.
Take Amazon’s now-legendary misstep. A few years ago, they built an AI hiring tool trained on ten years of resumes — mostly submitted by men, because the tech industry has long been a boys’ club. The result?
The AI learned, dutifully and without protest, that resumes mentioning the word “women’s” — as in “women’s soccer team” or “women’s chess club” — were less likely to be successful. So it penalized them.

Until you wake up in five years with a workforce that looks alarmingly homogenous, thinks the same, and struggles to adapt when the market shifts — because you coded out the weirdos, the misfits, and the non-traditional thinkers who would’ve saved your ass.
So what the hell should we do?
Let’s be clear: we’re not Luddites. AI has real potential in hiring — especially in reducing manual inefficiency (screening redundant resumes, managing logistics, flagging risk signals).
But the judgment part? The decision-making? The “who do we bet on” voice?
That’s not a math problem. That’s a leadership problem.
